Love In Ordinary Life

During a pre-screening of the film Love, Etc. at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, a theater full of New Yorkers fell in love. This film (to be released July 1st) was humorous and heartfelt. The viewer takes a journey through the great city of New York--following five stories all about love, hope and understanding. Whether you are young, old, gay, straight, single or married--you will want to see this film. Such a well done piece by first time feature director Jill Andresevic.

Art21

Art21 is a nonprofit organization that partners with artists in the area of contemporary art and makes them more accessible through the use of public programming. The organization's mission is to increase knowledge of contemporary art and ignite discussion. As a part of the cinematic collaboration that Art21 engages in, they have introduced a new series. This recently launched series, NewYorkCloseUp focuses on young artists (within the first decade of their career). All the artists featured live and work in New York.

Free Music Fridays

The American Folk Art Museum really comes alive on Friday nights. Not only can you view the exhibitions, but you can also hear live music and drink wine (or beer if you so desire). The Worsties Take New York

Nashville based band The Worsties made their way to the East coast to tour, promote and simply rock out. This female fronted band is a mix of punk and pop. The lead singer, Anna Worstell is a great talent that is full of energy and a bit unpredictable on stage. Her bandmates (Jesse Worstell, Jairo Ruiz and Nathan Shelton) showcase their talent and passion as they play to the point of sweat drenching their clothes. Check the band's website for tour dates. The June 3rd opening at Eyebeam Gallery was filled with a vibrant crowd of onlookers, art lovers and science buffs. (I even spotted astrophysicist Janna Levin there.) This exhibition that was first created and shown in Dublin at Science Gallery, is an exploration of music and the body with a series of installations that are highly interactive. The show runs through August 4th.

Hugo Boss Prize 2011

Hans-Peter Feldman, an established artist of nearly four decades was awarded the 2011 Hugo Boss Prize and given the honor of exhibiting in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The artist, known for his approach that consists of collecting, ordering and re-presenting items made the decision to display the prize itself. According to Assistant Curator, Katherine Brinson "At its core, this formal experiment presents an opportunity to experience an abstract concept—a numerical figure and the economic possibilities it entails—as a visual object and an immersive physical environment." The exhibition "Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen" is as dark and dramatic as the man himself. There is such high volume of visitors that the Metropolitan Museum has extended the show another week. A must see.

The Second Annual New York Gallery Week took place May 6-8, 2011. The three day presentation was scattered around the city. Friday evening gallery receptions were well attended by a diverse crowd of art loving New Yorkers. Curator walkthroughs, panel discussions and book signings were offered throughout the weekend. All events were open to the public.

Yesterday, The TimesCenter hosted the second annual event Envision: Addressing Global Issues through Documentaries, a collaboration between the Independent Film Project (IFP) and the United Nations (UN). The New York Times and HBO Documentaries were also sponsors of this well attended event. This year's event focused on the UN’s Millennium Development Goal #2: achieve universal primary education.

The full-length films "A Small Act" (airing on HBO Monday, July 12th) and "Waiting for Superman" (coming to theaters Friday, September 24th) were both screened and analyzed during subsequent panel discussions. By the end of each film, the viewer wanted to be a participant in the movement to better the educational systems that affect children worldwide. Perform a small act, take the pledge and make a change. Don't wait for "Superman", be him.

The Importance of Drawing

The Simon Preston Gallery's current exhibition consists of works on paper. The exhibition showcases the work of four artists that respectively use the mediums of ink, acrylic, oil and watercolor paints. The watercolor works of Nick Goss, when closely viewed, reveal the sketching that served as the works' foundation. The use of paint, albeit faint or saturated, clearly communicates the artist's vision. As a whole, the exhibition is a beautifully-done presentation.

The Homeless Museum of Art (HOMU) is an art project created by Filip Noterdaeme. HOMU is presented as a legitimate cultural institution. The current location is just at the foot of the 20th Street entrance of Highline Park--weekends only. This "museum without a home" concept seems to mock the cultural establishment and challenge its commercialism.

Men With Balls

Most known for innovative exhibitions, Apexart is a small space with big ideas. This space makes art accessible to diverse audiences by offering a variety of exhibitions, programs and events. Catchafire

Hoards of young professionals crowded into a steamy event space at the Puck Building last night. All had one thing in common, a desire to do good. Catchafire is an organization that is dispelling the myth that you can either do good or make money. Why not do both? Catchafire is the clearinghouse to do just that, pairing nonprofit organizations with professionals willing to volunteer their time and expertise. This kickoff event was very well attended and just an inclination of what is to come.

The Hole is in its very early stages, however the leadership of this fresh and innovative gallery have years of experience in the arts. Kathy Grayson and Meghan Coleman both formerly of the (now defunct) Deitch Projects are the masterminds behind this fun and creative space. The first exhibit "Not Quite Open For Business" is reflective of their journey and that of any artistic being. To hit a bump in the road, hold on and keep it moving demonstrates the character of these women. With "unfinished" works by community artists displayed; some pieces at times are seemingly strewn about the exhibition (curated by Taylor McKimens).

The Edible Garden

The New York Botanical Garden kicked off its new exhibit with a celebration of plants of the edible variety. The Edible Garden (opening weekend) offered information on cooking tools, demonstrations by professional chefs and a tasting terrace that provided samples of organic and eco-conscious foods and beverages. There were opportunities to meet entrepreneurs like Dan and Donna Ratner, (Cell-nique) and attend book signings by authors such as Louisa Shafia, (Lucid Food).

The Park Avenue Armory has a gargantuan show by French artist Christian Boltanski on view. This alternative art space is stunning. This monumental work is impacting from the moment that you walk into the space. The viewer is surrounded by discarded clothing and pounded by the sounds of heartbeats.

Meet and Greet

The lobby of MOCA - Museum of Chinese in America (215 Centre Street) was full of youth and positive energy as Magnetic North and Taiyo Na performed. Their west coast friends from Hyphen Magazine were present to meet and greet as well. With the participation from sponsors like the Chinatown Youth Initiatives and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, the event was a great success.

RAWnyc

RAW NYC is an independent project made of two parts. One half is the work of photographer Friko Starc that consists of candid portraits of strangers as they walk by 5 specific corners of Manhattan. The other is the work of furniture designer Carlo Sampietro showcasing his high-end home furniture made of found objects from the streets of NYC.
